Peripheral Neuropathy Awareness
Although the month of May is Neuropathy Awareness month, not a lot of people actually KNOW what this affliction is. An estimated 20 million people suffer from this chronic disease, but many more people need to understand and be aware of what neuropathy is.
Mainly, it is one’s feet that are the most affected but other areas of one’s body may be affected also.
Neuropathy occurs when peripheral nerves are damaged. These are the nerves that connect to your extremities. Once those nerves are damaged, they, of course, cannot function appropriately resulting in lower and/ or abnormal sensation. This decrease in sensation would normally be found in the extremities. Areas most affected areas would be fingers, toes, feet and hands.
Although the most common initiating factor of neuropathy is diabetes due to the lack of circulation causing numbness and loss of feeling, there are some other common causes of neuropathy.
These are some of the common factors resulting in neuropathy, but this list is not all inclusive.
One may help themselves to start treatment of neuropathy, but a medical professional is always a great first step and they should be consulted prior to any self-treatments. Vitamin supplementation is especially helpful when trying to restore nerves that have been damaged. One in-particular vitamin is a great source of pain easement, and that would be B vitamins. Prescription medications such as gabapentin may ordered by your doctor once you consult with them, but please be sure to consult with them prior to taking any prescribed medications to address your certain symptoms. Sometimes, galvanic stimulation may be administered to help improve the firing of damaged nerves. Another treatment sometimes overlooked is magnetic therapy.
Proper footwear, orthotics and even some inserts may help. Orthotics are inserts that are specifically made by your foot doctor as each person has a unique shape and size of their feet and support is critical to have, hence a specially made insert. This is especially true for people with diabetes. Your podiatrist may be your best friend at this point as they are capable of ordering custom-made shoes. These shoes may be made to stabilize the feet, limit motion and offer the needed support to reduce foot pain and to prevent any further damage.
Although neuropathy is a serious condition, we also need to raise awareness to others that may or may not know about the disease. Awareness is not always a sit down and talk situation, it may be just a simple writing as this that can be shared to hundreds, if not thousands, of people. Sometimes the best way to increase awareness is to poke a bit of fun at the disease as a bit of light-hearted banter can open many doors to discussion of the disease that affects over 20 million Americans.
